According to figures released by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while in custody since October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has stated that the actual toll is likely considerably higher, because of hundreds of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Notable Incidents

Several casualties in confinement have been high profile, including a middle-aged healthcare leader who lost his life in confinement after a third of a year in confinement.

A detainee detained alongside the victim testified that he was led to the courtyard by correctional officers immediately preceding his demise, visibly injured and unclothed from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in Israeli custody are unidentified. Detention administrators and military gave analysts with the number of casualties in custody, and basic additional information including the site where they died, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Identification Challenges

For 21 instances, primarily individuals from Gaza, investigators could not to match the limited information provided by officials to a casualty recorded by human rights groups, either through accounts from former inmates or coverage in the press.

The inmates’ next of kin might not have learned about their loved ones’ deaths also, as Israel has created obstacles to locate Palestinians it is confining. Over half a year at the outset of the hostilities, the Israeli military refused to give basic information about the status of thousands of individuals confined in Gaza, in effect implementing a practice of unacknowledged detention, as stated by the human rights group.
