Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
